Maple Baked Apples with Oat Crumble Hearts
Serves 6Prep 20m · Cook 45mDessertDesserts
Every fall my mother filled the core of each apple like she was tucking in a child. The one that split open in the oven was called the impatient one, and whoever had misbehaved that week had to eat it. It was still delicious, which I suspect was the real lesson.
Ingredients
- 6 firm baking apples (such as a tart, crisp variety)
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon fine salt
- 4 tablespoons cold butter, cubed
- 1/3 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 1/2 cup apple cider or water
- Heavy cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving
Instructions
- Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Core the apples from the top without cutting through the bottom, leaving a well about 1 1/4 inches wide. Peel a thin band around the top of each so they don't burst.
- Mix the oats, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Work in the cold butter with your fingers until clumpy, then stir in the nuts.
- Stand the apples in a baking dish and pack the crumble into their centers, mounding it on top.
- Pour the maple syrup over the apples and the cider around them.
